Gnome Crazy at the Michigan Ag Expo

Michigan Farm Radio Network (MFRN) continued its gnome tradition for the second year at the Michigan Ag Expo.  Everyone who listens to MFRN and has a garden out back wants a gnome … especially a Michigan State gnome!  Ag Expo takes place on the campus of Michigan State University, the country’s first Land Grant University, and the Spartan gnomes found new homes every hour of the three-day event. We had people signing up throughout the after hearing our PSA that aired in during reports ahead of the Ag Expo and also from the ad we ran in the Michigan Farm News and the Ag Expo Guide Book.  A few wives even sent their husbands in search of them after seeing the ad!

In addition to meeting listeners, Nicole also had the opportunity to participate in a grain engulfment simulator, gaining first-hand knowledge of how quickly someone can be engulfed in grain bin. The simulator travels the country each summer, averaging over 200 days on the road. According to Dan Neeman, director for the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety, the demos provide training to farmers, ranchers, agribusiness, and firefighters and EMS professionals, helping to ensure farm safety for everyone.
