Improving Your On-Air Sound

Rustin Hamilton, writer, producer, and partner at Illumina Filmworks, spoke at the 73rd NAFB Convention bout ways to improve your “on-air” sound during a Friday morning workshop.

“Step out on a cliff and do something someone else wasn’t willing to do,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton offered several tips to guide on-air improvement, including:

  1. Immerse yourself in quality media and entertainment.
  2. Record yourself, then listen and evaluate. Read aloud as you write.
  3. Use words that evoke images, and can be understood the first time.
  4. Keep it tight; no wasted words or phrasing.
  5. Don’t be afraid of your imagination.

Hamilton posed the following questions to serve as larger guides of improving your on-air presence:

  1. Who is your inspiration?
  2. What can you control?
  3. What are you doing now and how can you make it better?

“Create your own path, and think big!” said Hamilton.
