In May, NAFB scholarship winner Joel Penhorwood joined the staff at Ohio Ag Net (OAN) and Ohio’s Country Journal (OCJ) as a field reporter and farm broadcaster. He is a recent graduate of The Ohio State University (OSU) with a degree in Agricultural Communication. While at OSU, Joel was heavily involved in Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, serving as president for two years.

Lynn Ketelsen has announced the purchase of KNXR in Rochester, MN, a 100,000 watt FM station featuring Greatest Hits. It’s owned by Ketelsen and John Linder. KNXR has been accepted as an NAFB Station and will air farm reports by Linda Brekke and Ketelsen.
“Jay Gould was absolutely iconic as the WOWO farm director for about 34 years and really put WOWO on the map as one of the premier farm stations in the country during those years,” reports Rob Winters (WOWO, Fort Wayne, IN). Gould was the creator of the original farm show back in the early ‘30s called The Little Red Barn. The show had a catchy musical theme that was originally performed live in the studio.

Mike Hansen, long time employee of RFD-TV retired effective May 1. Hansen has been in agricultural marketing and communications since 1974, having worked in both radio and television in a variety of roles. For the past 16 years, he has been with the Rural Media Group, first with RFD-TV and continuing when it added RURAL RADIO on SiriusXM Channel 147.
In 2007, Liz (LeSatz) Lauck was an Agriculture Communications major at the University of Wyoming working hard to get through college when she was honored with an NAFB Foundation Scholarship. “Not only was the money a huge blessing, but my experience at the NAFB convention was so wonderful. Michelle Rook (WNAX, Yankton, SD) will be recognized as the 2016 South Dakota Governor’s Ag Ambassador on June 2, at the annual Governor’s Agricultural Summit in Brookings, SD. “Agriculture has a tremendous advocate in Michelle,” said Governor Dennis Daugaard. “She has devoted many years to telling the story of farm and ranch families who work hard to provide a safe, affordable food supply in South Dakota and beyond.”
